Kapas means raw cotton. The studio started in 2016 with two tables, one borrowed cutting shear and a single print from Bagru. We now make around four hundred pieces a month, all of them cut and stitched in our workroom by a team of nineteen.

Who we work with

Eleven printing families, two villages, one weaving cluster.

    Bagru

    Thirty kilometres west of Jaipur. Dabu mud resist, syahi black and indigo. Seven families print for us here, most of them Chhipa printers who have worked this way for generations.

  2. 02

    Sanganer

    Fifteen minutes from the studio. Finer, denser florals on a white ground, printed with finely carved blocks. Four families, one of them has printed for us since the first week.

  3. 03

    Pit looms

    Our handloom sarees come from a small weaving cluster we buy from directly, paying on dispatch, not on sale. Four days at the loom for one saree.

The cloth

Only natural fibres

Mulmul
A very fine plain weave cotton, 80s to 100s count. Soft from the first wear and almost weightless. We line it where it would be sheer.
Linen
44 and 60 lea linen from a mill in West Bengal, bought undyed. It creases, and we like that. It softens with every wash.
Cambric
60s count cotton with a tighter weave than mulmul. It holds a block print sharply, so we use it for our busier prints.
Handloom cotton
Woven on pit looms by families we buy from directly. Sarees are 5.5 m with a 0.8 m blouse piece.

Care

Washing natural fibres

    Wash cold

    Natural dyes like indigo, madder and haldi soften in hot water. Cold water, mild liquid detergent, no bleach.

  • 02

    Wash separately, twice

    Block printed cloth releases a little colour in the first two washes. After that it settles.

  • 03

    Dry in shade

    Hard afternoon sun fades plant dyes quickly. Dry inside out, in shade, on a line.

  • 04

    Iron damp

    Mulmul and linen iron best while slightly damp, on the reverse, on a warm setting.
